Stone Stairway and Hillside Retreat: Phase I Overview
Last year, clients approached us to design access from their upper backyard to a lower portion of their property. The two areas of their backyard were separated by a steep hillside with fallen trees and debris.
With four active boys eager to explore the creek below, they wanted a safe and easy way to enjoy their entire outdoor space.

The JBLC design team developed a plan to install a curved set of Redi-Rock steps to provide access from the top to the bottom of the steep hillside and a recessed natural stone patio for a fire pit partway down the space.
The lower level would be easily accessible via the steps, and the family would be able to utilize the lower area for their trampoline and sports.
The curved staircase would be durable and provide an aesthetically interesting journey from the top of the yard to the bottom.

Once installed, the steps were shored up and stabilized with boulders of every size and shape. The beautiful stone patio was created with a centered fire pit for use as an entertaining space throughout the year, weather permitting.
Our design team will next fill the pockets among the boulders with Pachysandra, various ground cover plants, and install low-voltage accent light fixtures in phase II of the project.
We are excited to complete this project over the coming months.
Stay tuned for the updates and final photos in the fall of ’26!
